Tradition - Scott Benoit Memorial Award

Scott Benoit (1971-1991), a standout ballplayer at CHS in the late 1980s, died unexpectedly on Feb. 1, 1991. The award which is named in his memory is annually presented to a person who displays - as the plaque reads - "Love and Appreciation of the Game of Baseball" at CHS. Former baseball coach Dave Saddlemire and former softball coach Lynn Hier helped establish the award.

A 1989 graduate, Benoit's varsity career began midway through his sophomore season. In 41 career games, mostly as the squad's graceful center fielder, the right-handed hitting, left-handed throwing Benoit swatted 51 hits and posted a .392 batting average. He also hit six home runs, including a shot into the road at Winooski HS on May 9, 1989. In the field, Benoit committed only five errors during his career.

As a junior Benoit led the team with a .450 batting average, 27 hits and 12 stolen bases, and as a senior he hit .362 with four home runs and was an All-Metro League selection. He was also captain of the team both of those seasons.

He graduated among the top three in program history in a bevy of career categories, including hits, runs, home runs, batting average, slugging percentage, extra-base hits and total bases.

Those who knew him remember him fondly:

"Scott Benoit was a free-spirited center fielder who was one of the better outfielders I have coached anywhere. He could hit for average and power. He was an excellent base runner, not only with speed but very good instincts. He was very good at drawing a throw from an outfielder and then taking the extra base. He could decoy his base running style very well. He probably should have been on the Twin State team and did not get the recognition he deserved."
-former head coach Dave Saddlemire

"He was a great guy to have on the team and a good friend to have off of the field. One of the funniest guys I ever knew, constantly wise-cracking on somebody or himself. Loved baseball, as well. Fast as hell, pretty good stick and was a solid center fielder for us. He really enjoyed the game. Terrible accident that took him away."
